More about Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social emotional learning (SEL) is a valuable approach that focuses on developing skills related to self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. While SEL can offer numerous benefits, there are certain aspects it is not able to fully address. In these cases, families should contact a mental health care provider.
Here are a few examples:
  • Individual Therapy: SEL programs do not cater to the specific needs of individuals requiring intensive therapeutic interventions. Individual therapy, provided by trained mental health professionals, offers personalized support and treatment for mental health concerns such as trauma, anxiety, or depression.
  • Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment: SEL programs aim to promote emotional well-being and enhance social skills but do not replace the expertise of clinicians in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders. Conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), or bipolar disorder often require specialized assessments, diagnosis, and targeted treatments beyond the scope of SEL.
  • Complex Psychological Issues: While SEL equips individuals with skills to manage emotions, cope with stress, and build healthy relationships, it may not be sufficient for addressing deep-rooted psychological issues or complex mental health conditions. For example, individuals struggling with severe trauma, personality disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse, depression, anxiety disorders, or individuals who are suicidal require comprehensive therapeutic approaches that go beyond the scope of SEL.
  • Academic Instruction: SEL programs primarily focus on developing social and emotional competencies and do not directly replace or provide instruction of traditional academic curricula. Although SEL can positively impact academic performance by fostering emotional well-being, increase motivation, teach goal setting, and help students to develop a growth mindset, SEL classes do not teach core curriculum subjects.
  • Environmental Factors: SEL programs primarily target individual and interpersonal factors but may have limitations in addressing broader environmental factors that contribute to social and emotional challenges. Issues related to poverty, discrimination, family dysfunction, or community violence require systemic changes and interventions beyond the scope of SEL programs.
